Jorge Vela, J.D.

Jorge Vela received his bachelor’s degree from Vanderbilt University in 2006. He went on to attend the University of Texas School of Law, obtaining his law degree in 2011.

After law school, Jorge accepted a position as a felony prosecutor in 49th District Court of Webb County, located in Laredo, Texas. He prosecuted violent crimes which included aggravated robbery, aggravated assault, intoxicated manslaughter, aggravated kidnapping, murder, and solicitation of capital murder.

In 2014, Jorge accepted a position with the United States Department of Justice as an Assistant United States Attorney in the Southern District of Texas. As a federal prosecutor, Jorge investigated large-scale drug trafficking organizations tied to violent Mexican drug cartels along the U.S. – Mexico border. He helped secure significant jury trial verdicts, including a life sentence for the head of a Laredo drug trafficking organization. He also prosecuted and secured guilty verdicts against defendants accused of smuggling undocumented aliens, firearms trafficking, possession of child pornography, online solicitation of a minor, and United States Visa fraud.

Jorge moved to Austin, Texas in 2017 and served as an Assistant District Attorney for Travis County. Once again, he prosecuted violent felonies, helping secure guilty verdicts for defendants accused of Aggravated Assault, Robbery, Aggravated Robbery, Aggravated Kidnapping, Murder, and Capital Murder.
